Finale Episode - The Blacktip Challenge

The two of us drew heavily from our own shark release fishing experience and filmed this series from multiple perspectives to provide an up-close-and-personal interaction experience for the viewer. Our production, writing and editing goals were aimed at capturing both the excitement of this unique sport and the commitment of the angler's involved to shark science and conservation. This full length finale episode includes numerous examples of that along with innovative angling protocols we pioneered in a competitive setting.

Background ... years before creating the Guy Harvey Ultimate Shark Challenge, our ongoing collaborative work within the recreational shark fishing industry led to this interesting and multi-faceted opportunity to film and produce an all-release, land-based shark fishing tournament.

As the project evolved, we also lent our collaborative expertise to the event's creator, Josh Jorgensen, in designing specific catch, document, tag and release protocols, co-authoring the rules and regulations and publishing a best practices field guide for competing anglers. As with the Ultimate Shark Challenge, we implemented these elements to ensure the safe and proper handling of sharks, while maximizing their post-release welfare, and also coordinated research tagging with the National Marine Fisheries Service, Apex Predators Tagging Program.

We extend our appreciation to everyone involved. The project threw some unique challenges our way, but in the end, we captured and produced some of the most innovative and unique shark release fishing action that's ever been seen. We hope you enjoy it ...
